Let us first deal with the issue of the veracity of the allegation.
Murray Weiss is the reporter who interviewed the woman who states she slept with John Edwards for pay in 2007. Murray Weiss, at least when he was at National Journal, used to be very good at firming all the details, crossing all the 't's, and dotting all the 'i's.
That would be A. B? Since 2006, it has been the little kept secret that C.I. stopped supporting John Edwards after meeting him (this was when he was first running for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, not in 2007 and 2008) because he made a pass and got "grabby." She told Elizabeth Edwards and was done with John Edwards. (She ended up supporting John Kerry.) Rebecca has told that story for years and years online. And it was always rather obvious she was talking about C.I. but then C.I. did that entry awhile back where she made it clear it was her. (I already knew it was C.I. It was clear several years ago.)
So we know he is pure sleaze.
So John Edwards wants to be believed that this indiscretion did not happen?
He is arguing, "Yes, I knew my wife had cancer and I cheated on her with a mistress I repeatedly slept with in 2007; however, I did not also sleep with a prostitute."
That is where he drew the line?
Reminds me of a scene in the film The Two Jakes, where Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is at the police station and Walsh (David Keith) is being an asshole.
Jack Nicholson: Besides, I wouldn't extort a nickel from my worst enemy. That's where I draw the line.
David Keith: I'll tell you, Jake. I knew a whore once. For the right money, she'd piss in a guy's face. But she wouldn't s**t on his chest. That's where she drew the line.
Jack Nicholson: Junior, all I can say is, I hope she wasn't too much of a disappointment to you.
So we need to remember that John Edwards says he did not have sex with the prostitute. Just like he said that he did not have a mistress. Just like he said he did not know if the child was his. Just like . . .
Even if he is innocent, Mr. Edwards is asking for more suspended disbelief than most humans are capable of.
This is C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot" for today:
