Do you remember Deep Throat? The alleged source for Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's award winning Watergate coverage? Deep Throat was revealing, among other things, that the corruption and criminality -- including, of course, the Watergate break-in, went all the way to the top of the Tricky Dick administration. Their coverage would help force Richard Nixon to resign in disgrace.
Deep Throat was thought to have good reason to fear going public.
Supposedly, 3 women were sexually harassed by Herman Cain back in the 90s. Two of them filed complaints. I do not know why they are getting a pass from the press.
They are not in danger. Presumably, Mr. Cain knows two of the women (the two who filed complaints) so keeping their names out of the paper does not shield them from Mr. Cain.
These are serious charges. Unless someone is willing to step out publicly and make these charges, I think the story needs to be dropped.
I am really shocked that the press is given anonymity to people launching attacks on Mr. Cain. You are not supposed to be able to do that.
This does not happen once, please remember. It sets a standard. So now the standard is that any whisper can be repeated by the press and amplified and turned into a big story. No one needs to confront or publicly accuse anyone of anything.
That is not how journalism is supposed to work.
Thank you to Betty who is grabbing Solyndra for me this week. I plan to finish up with this story tomorrow.
This is C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot" for today:
