"World's Dumbest Alleged Human Being: Bob Somerby"
"Bob Somerby, the new Rachel Maddow"
"Go read Hillary Is 44"
While I believe community members have grasped my points and my intent, visitors e-mailing to the public e-mail account for The Common Ills (firstname.lastname@example.org) have a number of questions.
Do I hate Bob Somerby?
No, I do not hate Mr. Sombery. I do hate it when he alters the facts -- something he has rightly called Rachel Maddow and others out for.
So what if he criticizes Maureen Dowd?
He does not criticize her. There is an intense hatred in his writing about her that he refuses to fess up to. He does not treat her as he does others. The closest in treatment would be two women he no longer bothers to mention. The three women together are part of the reason, in 2000, he was seen as anti-woman and sexist. There are many men who have done far worse -- using Mr. Sombery's scale -- than Dowd. But they are forever given a pass. E.J. Dionne, for example, is not treated with the same level of intense hatred. And for me, he always seems willing to allow a fresh start. With Ms. Dowd it is non-stop hatred and hatred that goes beyond reason because were Ms. Dowd guilty of all the things Mr. Somerby feels she is, she is one columnist and her reach is not what Mr. Somerby would like to believe it is.
I do not think he is fair to Ms. Dowd. I think he is more than willing to catalogue her alleged sins but he is not at all interested in nothing the things she has gotten correct. Most importantly, he does not like her writing style.
If you do not like the person's writing style, you are never going to enjoy their columns, so stop reading her. I certainly find Thomas Friedman (to name but one) far more damaging to the country than Ms. Dowd. But Friedman barely exists at The Daily Howler because Mr. Somerby lives in a very tiny section of the country.
You do know Bob is joking sometimes?
I wish he would joke more often. A good Daily Howler will cause me to smile and nod. A great one will have me laughing out loud.
Do you believe that Barack Obama was born in Kenya?
No. I have never stated that. I believe he was born in Hawaii. I also believe that is really not the issue. The issue is he has never produced his birth certificate which would have information that is not on the "certificate of live birth." I believe he is the one who promised the most transparent administration and yet, on something this basic, he refuses to do what is needed.
He could end all the rumors -- as Chris Matthews and, earlier, our own Dona have pointed out -- just by releasing the birth certificate. He could help Hawaii by allowing them to sell it for $100. Why he refuses to do so is beyond me.
But I do propose that in the near future, Congress pass a law that declares once someone
